This program assists students with navigating the complexities of working on real world legal cases and also prepares students to transition to the University of Phoenix to earn a Bachelors's degree immediately after completing the program.
The program explores how computers have revolutionized the modern law office. Paralegals can take advantage of the new computer technology to make word processing easier, legal research faster and more effective, and the gathering and organization of information more streamlined than ever before. Computers have also complex legal databases of information and being aware of issues of electronic privacy. In this program, you will learn how computers are used in the modern law office.
This program is also designed to introduce paralegal students to the use of evidence in a lawsuit or criminal action, the various types of evidence available, the paralegal’s role in gathering and organizing that evidence, and how to use it during alternative dispute resolution or trial. Students will also be taught the importance of the preservation of evidence and chain of custody. Fact patterns in four different areas of the law, intellectual property, medical malpractice, criminal law, and product liability will be used to illustrate scenarios a paralegal may encounter while attempting to gather evidence to support the client’s case. Published court decisions also provide real-life illustrations of admissibility issues involving different types of evidence.
