It is important for paralegals to understand the ethical ramifications of disclosing privileged information of the attorneys that they work. This is only one of the ethical considerations that all attorneys must adhere to regardless of where they practice law. Failing to comply with the state bar's rules of professional conduct can result in fines, suspension, and disbarment. These are extremely serious consequences for not adhering to ethical considerations. Paralegals may not be required to adhere to these same set of rules that guide the actions of the attorneys that they work for, but they must know what they are and where to find them in order to avoid causing harm to the attorneys that they work for that may not be able to be rectified.
All attorneys are licensed to practice law. This licensure is predicated on them staying in compliance with the ethical rules of conduct of the state bar within the state(s) that they practice in. It is not only attorneys that should understand this professional rule book so to speak. It is equally important for paralegals to understand them. All of these rules will not apply to a paralegal's job, but to know and not need the information is better than not to know and need the information.
