From jobs and careers to social and relational challenges occur in every aspect of life. It is always important to remember that challenges do not come to stay. It is not possible to be defeated by any challenge when you know that you can overcome it. No challenge that you ever face will be able to defeat you if you approach it as if you are undefeatable. It does not mean that you will never be fired, never experience set back or loss, but what it does mean is that whatever comes your way you are well able to not only cope with it but to overcome it.
Overcoming a challenge and coping with a challenge are two entirely different things. Coping with something means that you have resigned yourself to dealing with it whether dealing with it is healthy or unhealthy. On the other hand overcoming something means that you either remove it, correct it, or push it to the side. For example, coping with a bully means that you avoid going to the areas where you may face the bully, succumb to the bully, or complain about the bullying without directly challenging the bullying behavior. This is not only counterproductive it oftentimes heightens the same behavior that you may be trying to avoid. In this same scenario overcoming this issue would require facing the bully and making it clear that you will not tolerate the behavior, remove the person's ability to bully (moving to another department, reporting them to someone with higher authority with the intention of not only complaining, but with the intention of having the person reprimanded, or ignoring them). Bullies thrive on the attention that they receive from their behavior. When you ignore it and swat it off of you like you would a gnat the impact that they are seeking will be lost.
Triumphing over challenges requires facing them not merely ducking and dodging real issues. A mind set on overcoming will always allow for the attainment of personal and professional goals. Nothing will hinder you if you decide before the challenge arises that you will overcome it.
From the beginning of time there has always been structures in place to ensure that individuals within society work within the confines of moral and ethical mores. Throughout history there have been different structures and people who ensured that these morals, ethical codes, and societal rules were followed.
When the lines become blurred and these same mores and individuals that were created to protect the populace begin to victimize them the very fabric of society as a whole is weakened. Law and order is integral to any society. It is often used to demarcate the civilized from the uncivilized, but even within the animal kingdom there is law and order. For example, study the behavior of lions, bears, and gorillas. They all have an organized method for breeding, mating, and ensuring their survival during climatical changes.
Although, laws change based off of various factors these laws whether man made or not create order. Without the one you can not have the other. When there is no law, there can never be any order. Paralegals are not required to be licensed like attorneys and other professions, but are tasked with furthering the aims of the law. This can not be avoided by considering the role as one that is merely a job based career and not one that has the responsibility to uphold the the law.
Have you been mulling over the ideal of starting your own freelance paralegal business? Maybe it is time to take that leap, maybe you need to shelf the idea until circumstances are more suitable, or maybe keeping your day job will be the best option. Before deciding make sure that you have all the information that you need to make an informed decision.
When a paralegal decides to provide freelance paralegal services it is more than merely deciding to become a contractor instead of an employee. There are various scenarios for offering freelance paralegal services, but they all require the need to work as an independent consultant instead of an employee of a particular company or firm. This is where the challenge(s) come into play. Some go into freelancing believing that the additional freedom that working for themselves provides will be easier than being an employee. This is a misconception that leads to a great deal of frustration and failure at being successful at freelancing. Others do not understand that when you are a freelance paralegal you become an entrepreneur who is responsible for marketing, selling and delivering your services. Freelancing is a form of entrepreneurship and it is not easy, but success is possible.

The phrase "Fake it until you make it" may work concerning matters that only require conversation and appearance, but when it comes to demonstrating value it is impossible to make it faking it. For example, lets say you are asked to electronically pull together the evidence in a case using a popular legal technology program like Summation or Trial Director. A winning smile, firm handshake, and calm composure will not allow you to complete this task without knowing how to use these particular programs. You can fake it while you call on friends, co-workers, and read through instruction manuals, but when your managing attorney realizes that it took you three times as long to complete the project than what was expected that winning smile may turn into a frown as you are handed a pink slip.
Confidence is one thing that your career can not do without. It is essential for everything you do from interacting with clients to presenting your ideas to colleagues and supervisors. It is not what you learn by taking legal education but by understanding your worth and value. It can not be faked or feigned, but it can be practiced.
Instead of faking confidence which will only allow you to land a new job, promotion, or raise but not allow you to keep it, do what is necessary to build your confidence by actually knowing and mastering your job and career.
